New Music | Deli Rowe ‘Smile Again’ Review

This isn’t Deli Rowe’s first go round at HLX and I’m sure it won’t be her last. If you haven’t done so, checkout her previous feature.  Since the release of her first project back in 2010, Deli has continuously gained the momentum and attention needed to propel her musical career upward. It’s only right that we bring you a review of Deli’s third EP, ‘Smile Again’

Upon first listening to Deli’s voice, I got a very soulful vibe.  However, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the EP did not stick to a specific genre.  ‘Smile Again’ is a 5 track multi-genre project. It encompasses elements of dance hall, house and funk.  Previously released track, ‘Let it Be’, has to be one of my favorites.  From the guitar in the beginning, which she is playing, to the pure instrumentation involved in the creation of this track, I couldn’t get enough.  I would love to hear the full guitar version.

In the title track, ‘Smile Again’, Deli gives listeners something different than what she’s accustom to.  Although in her track breakdown, which you can find on her YouTube channel, she admits this was a challenging track for her, we can’t tell.  I found myself randomly singing ‘Smile Again’ throughout my day and dancing as I did.  Deli’s vocals mixed well with the funky beat creating an excellent fusion of sound.  Being from Chicago where listening to house music is an unwritten rule, I definitely give this track my stamp of approval.

Deli uses “Space to Move” to remind us that we have to take our destiny into our on hands.  She ultimately sings about her challenges in the music industry and at one point wanting to quit.  She strongly sings that this is her music and it will be done her way – therefore, give her the space she needs to move.  It is a very personal track. Closing out the EP is Deli’s dancehall track, ‘Back to Business’.  With this track she reminds us that there is work to be done and we have to get back to the business of love, the business of life and  the business of music.

Overall, each song on ‘Smile Again’ offers something for everyone and is definitely worth the listen. From the soulful sound of ‘Let It Be’  to the hip winding dance hall vibe on ‘Back to Business’, there is no shortage of instrumentation or vocal quality. In conclusion, this project’s message is one of  growth and happiness.  There are endless possibilities when you leave the past behind you and remember to smile.  I’m excited to see what more she has in store for us.

Growing up on the South Side of Chicago I was taught at a young age how to hustle, be independent and resilient. Since a mere child, I have always been one to guide my own destiny. After spending my high schools years at Jones College Prep, a magnet school in downtown Chicago, I went on to receive 8 full ride scholarships to various universities around the country, something I never would have expected. Ultimately, I made a wonderful decision in choosing my college home at the illustrious North Carolina A&T State University. Aside from mastering the art of the 'turn up', college taught me so much more. However, this didn’t just include the ins and outs of Computer Science. College gave me a window to various styles, personalities and looks. This is where my passion for media, radio, art and imagery flourished.
