Fade – Jerrod | Review

Jerrod’s album, Fade, was released November 2018. It is available on major streaming platforms.  Jerrod’s album boasts a variety of sounds for all types of listeners.  He showcases his wide range of vocals, although they at times get lost in the music.

Who is Jerrod?

If you are unfamiliar with who Jerrod is, he is a singer-songwriter raised in North Carolina by way of  Suffolk, Virginia.  Jerrod’s love for music was cultivated at North Carolina A&T State University.  He currently performs at a variety of private events, weddings and festivals. In 2018, Jerrod had the pleasure of opening for the 2018 Art of Cool Festival on the main stage for Maxwell, Anthony Hamilton, and Damien Escobar.

Hot or Not?!

In order to give Jerrod a fair review  I listened to Fade in a variety of settings – work, home, commuting or driving.  In my daily life, each of these activities evokes a different mood and is a new opportunity for the music to grab my attention.

Jerrod’s latest release is Fade, a 14 track album with features from Daddy Jugo, Kain and Irie Child.  It also includes previously released singles like 4th Qtr and Rockin.

Upon hearing that Jerrod was an Aggie I was excited to hear his music, however I still have mixed feelings about the release.  Fade starts off on a high note with Mesmerize featuring Daddy Jugo, this song is actually one of my favorites.  It is also where his vocals sound the strongest. Daddy Jugo also adds a nice vibe to the track.

Holy Grail is another one of the tracks that gives Fade a needed boost. The addition of the female voice on the chorus was much appreciated.  However, Honey left a sour taste in my mouth.  Jerrod attempts a reggae vibe which wasn’t as successful as it could have been.

As the album progresses, he at times has a very airy sound that can get redundant throughout the project. There are also several moments of excessive runs, which take away from the actual song.

Jerrod closes out the project with Fourth Quarter – Edit. It would have been nice if this spot would have been saved for a song which was not previously released.

Final Verdict

Overall, the project was simply “okay”. There wasn’t  any song that I felt inclined to play over and over again or that was stuck in my head.

I give Jerrod’s album, Fade, a 5.5 across the board.  It wasn’t bad, but there was definitely room for improvement.  However, with the right song options, I feel like his voice could really shine.

Growing up on the South Side of Chicago I was taught at a young age how to hustle, be independent and resilient. Since a mere child, I have always been one to guide my own destiny. After spending my high schools years at Jones College Prep, a magnet school in downtown Chicago, I went on to receive 8 full ride scholarships to various universities around the country, something I never would have expected. Ultimately, I made a wonderful decision in choosing my college home at the illustrious North Carolina A&T State University. Aside from mastering the art of the 'turn up', college taught me so much more. However, this didn’t just include the ins and outs of Computer Science. College gave me a window to various styles, personalities and looks. This is where my passion for media, radio, art and imagery flourished.
