Trapped: Thee Instrumental Mixtape | Review

A couple months ago we introduced you to artist and producer Vice Versa, when he released his track “Riding Thru My City” as a part of his #MusicMonday series. This lead us to believe that more music, and possibly even a full project,  was on the way. It appears we were right, however there is a slight twist. Vice announced that he would be releasing a mixtape on June 8th entitled “Trapped: Thee Instrumental Mixtape”. Yes, you read that correctly! This is pure music. No lyrics. This is no surprise coming from an artist who often says he is a producer first and a rapper second. I am happy to say that HLX was given early access to the project to write a full review before it’s release. So here it is!

First, let me explain my process of listening to a new project for the first time. I always play the entire project at least twice, top to bottom without skipping through or past any songs. Then I begin to skip through and listen to the songs that really stuck out to me. After that, I may put my phone on shuffle and see how the tracks feel next to the other music I am listening to at the moment.

This test brings me to one of my favorite songs on the project, entitled “Been A G”. After hearing this track between two from Drake’s “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late,” it was clear that this track belonged! With it’s simple yet amazing groove and classic sample you would think it was bonus track from the deluxe edition. It he clear Vice Versa’s production is on par with (and maybe in some cases ahead) of what we are hearing in the industry today. Along with “Been A G” a few of the other stand out tracks include “French Shit”, “Rumspringer”, and “Lit”. You can check on the full tracklist for the project below.

Overall “Trapped” is truly a work of art and showcases his skill set as a producer. He ability to create a groove and make you vibe along with the beat is definitely appreciated. Mr. Versa is also a wizard with a sample. Knowing just to right amount to add to take the sample to the next level, while also making those additions fit so naturally it can sometimes hard to tell what part of the sample and what isn’t.

Tracklist

1.  Been A G
2.  Crooked Ass
3.  Turnt Nigga
4.  French Shit
5.  Rumspringer
6.  Color Money
7.  Lit
8.  ME, Myself and I

Vice also provided some insight to his mindset when putting this project together. He mentions this is a selection of some of the trap styled beats he has created since first began producing. Also, he stated this project reflects his current mood as of late and “there are no other words to describe this mixtape.” Hence why he has decided to let the music do the talking.

#TRAPPED: Thee INSTRUMENTAL mixtape|…will feature 8 of my favorite #trap styled #instrumental beats that i have produced since the time i started producing! THESE ARE NOT YOUR ORDINARY TRAP BEATS! These beats are a reflection of my #style, #personality, #sound, #originality and #mood, as of late! Although I would have loved to hear his lyrical take on his recent experiences, this mixtape definitely proves music is the universal language. “Trapped: Thee Instrumental Mixtape” will be available for free on June 8th. We will be sure to provide the link as soon as it it available.

Any rappers out there looking for beats this may be your chance, however we have reason to believe Vice Versa may be working with another artist we have featured in the past, Are Om. He has shown to be greatly anticipating this project and many add the lyrics to this story and release his own version of the mixtape. We’ll be sure to keep you updated.
